ROCK ISLAND BRIDGE

L.G. Barcus and Sons Inc. raise the Rock Island Bridge in Kansas City, Kansas for the second time in 72 years.

The bridge, originally built in 1905 and used by the Rock Island Railroad until 1980, requires elevation to meet current flood standards set by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

L.G. Barcus was previously hired by the Corps in 1951 to install screw-lift gates on the bridge to raise its trusses in anticipation of high waters.  The Unified Government of Wyandotte County/Kansas City, Kansas has contracted L.G. Barcus to raise each of the three trusses by approximately 4 feet to meet the 750-year flood standards

  • L.G. Barcus began work on the project in March, removing rails and old railroad ties, and a groundbreaking ceremony was held on May 16.
  • The Rock Island Bridge will undergo commercial redevelopment, featuring 11,000 square feet of entertainment space, including a food hall, bars, coffee shops, event spaces, offices, and walkways for pedestrians and bikers.
  • The $12 million project, expected to open in summer 2024, is being hailed as “America’s first destination landmark bridge” and will span the size of three football fields.
  • In addition to lifting the bridge, L.G. Barcus has been contracted by Flying Truss LLC, the project’s developer, to construct new decks and build out various amenities.
  • L.G. Barcus, a fourth-generation family-owned business established in 1920, employs around 100 people and has completed over 5,000 construction projects.
